Book Spotlight: Keeper of Reign by Emma Right

Good Evening, Beardies!

On Sunday I did a Book Blast on Emma Right's novel, Keeper of Reign, as part of a Book Tour. Here is the second installment of that Tour, a Book Spotlight on said title.

Keeper of Reign

Premise:
Lord Gehzurolle and his evil minions, the Scorpents, are seeking and killing Keepers of the land of Reign and their Heirs. Jules Blaze is one of those Heirs. After his grandparents go missing and his mother and others are kidnapped, Jules must cross Brooke Beginning to the dangerous and forbidden land of Handover to find answers from a man who may not even exist. With only their dragonfly lanterns in tow for protection, Jules and his crew must fight to save his mother—and each other—before it's too late.

Gems for Writers:
World Building. Emma Right's worlds of Reign and Handover are unique and refreshing: the backstory, the denizens that populate both, and the curse that plagues them all are variations of other stories I've read—yet describably different. The effort and thought behind the world building of the series is evident.

Characterization. Right does a great job of creating memorable and likeable characters. Each has a distinct personality that is maintained throughout the tale, and each bring a little something to the literary table; there are no extraneous, undeveloped characters that serve the story or plot no purpose. Emma also does a great job of staying true to the original characterizations—aside from some (but little) character growth—set forth in their first appearances.

Rating:

Conclusion:
Keeper of Reign has an interesting premise, one which kept me reading. Despite this, however, it is a weak beginning to a potentially promising series. It was very fast-paced and constantly changed scenery—but sometimes this, too, felt contrived, as if the constant string of action was the only thing which drove the story forward and not the plot itself. Also, lack of proper editing for format and grammar made this a cumbersome read at times.

Écrire souvent, bien écrire, et écrire avec bonheur,
